HUBBARD RUSSELL, SR

1687-1726

Hubbard, Sr. was born in Menotomy (now Arlington), Massachusetts to Jason & Mary (Hubbard) Russell on May 20th, 1687. He married Elizabeth Dickson in 1710, who was born in Cambridge to John & Margery (Winship) Dickson. Hubbard’s mother, Mary gave them about eight acres of land for their homestead, and he built a house and barn on it.

Hubbard was a private in the French and Indian Wars. He held the position of being the first president of Menotomy, Massachusetts.

Hubbard and Elizabeth’s first child, Jason, was born in 1711, but died at four years old. They had four more children, two girls and two boys. The same year that baby Hobert was born, Hubbard died at a young age of thirty-nine years old, leaving Elizabeth with three children, Mary, Jason, and Margery. There isn’t any record at this time about Hobert. He may have died at childbirth or went with his mother when she remarried.

Three years later, Elizabeth married Joseph Holden in 1729 whose wife just died leaving him with seven children, one being an infant.

When Elizabeth remarried, she relinquished her rights in Hubbard’s estate, and it reverted entirely to his parents. Jason was ten years old, Mary was seventeen and Margery was thirteen years old at this time. Jason and his sisters had their grandfather appointed as guardian, and went to live in his house.

It was about this time period, about 1730, that Hubbard’s house was torn down. It was gone by 1737, and it is possible that the materials may have gone toward the new rooms on Jason’s house, (Hubbard’s father) to accommodate his suddenly increased family.

Elizabeth lived to be eighty-six years old, dying in 1784.
