Avery Phillip Russell

1882-1902

Avery Phillip Russell was born into a very large, close family. He was the ninth child of seventeen children.

Avery’s older sister, Etta and family had moved to Cuba and while they were there, her son had died in Cuba. Avery was planning to save enough money to go to Cuba and bring his sister Etta and her two surviving children back home. Etta’s husband was staying until the law would let him bring the body of their child back to the States.

Avery had been working for Spaulding Co., at Kings Valley, Oregon for only three days when he was killed while logging on the upper waters of the Lucklamute, by a tree falling upon him. His companions were cutting down a tree. At the time he was working down the side of the hill, in a place out of sight from the other men. Just as the tree was falling they heard a noise where he was located; and gave a warning cry, but it was too late. The end of the tree struck him, causing injuries from which he died within seven hours.

Avery was only twenty years old when he died in 1902.
