ABBOTT AUGUSTUS TODD

1910-1988

Abbot was the last child born to Levi and Etta Todd in 1910. When he was only five years old, his parents divorced and his father moved out to a homestead not far away. His older brother, Leo, was 20 years old who dropped out of school to run the farm and keep the family afloat.

It was Abbott's and Rainous’ job to hoe and take care of the melon patches.  They would stay at the melon patches to care for them for several days at a time, eating melons and homemade bread, before going home for clean clothes.  They would walk back and forth a distance of about 1 1/2 miles. It was a tough few years to get enough for food and clothes.

Abbott and Emery attended the Brittan School, the same one that their mother, Etta, went to.

Emery and Abbott went to old Mexico in 1931 to visit their Uncle Aurelus's widow. Abbott shot himself accidently while in Old Mexico and Emery brought him home. Abbott lost the one lung and a couple of ribs damaged by the shot.  Emery went back to old Mexico again. But he came home broke and then went into house building.

Abbott suffered a long while with his injury. There remained two pieces of metal from the bullet and then infections. Even through his rehabilitation, he trained a basketball team, and took art & music classes.

Abbott learned many trades and professions but his one love is the nursing profession, especially the care of older people.  He lived in Sacramento. He has worked at gardening, barber trade and LVN nursing since and done a very good job of it.  In 1973 he married Marion Watters, a very wonderful person. They lived in Carmichael.

In 1988, Abbott died at 78 years old.
